Greg Manchess’ set of concept work for the film’s poster. The last image of this set is pretty close to what the poster came to be (with variations, as the agency had a bunch of artists iterating on similar concepts). In Greg’s own words:

“Ideas were being tossed out to quite a few of us at the time. They just wanted to see who was going to get close to what they wanted. Then the process became one of collaging the “best parts” into one design and letting one artist do the finish. There was a boatload of bad posters in those days, partly because of the process of Hollywood trying to cobble together all the best parts of someone’s skills and thinking they could create something great from pieces of great”.

The final poster image was painted by Morgan Weistling (see comments). Apparently it was stolen from Morgan long ago. Just in case you see it around!
