Description

In 1940 legendary artist H.J. Ward painted what many felt was the ultimate Superman portrait. The original art (oil on canvas) hung for years and years in the DC Comics Board Room. (It now resides at Lehman College) As a fan of Superman art of this era... I've always wanted this piece, but of course that would be impossible. So in 2004 I commissioned the great artist Terry Twigg to paint a re-creation. His is done in pastels and is AMAZING. SO faithful to the original... the image here just doesn't do it justice. Of all the superhero art I've got hanging on my walls, this is the one most commented on. (Sorry for the angle I had to photograph the art from. It's framed and is therefore hard to photograph.)

That's amazing, Larry. I remember the original painting being used on a treasury-sized book in the 70's that my mom bought for me. What a great addition idea!

Yup! That Treasury is one that I have too. It was also used in a small DC Digest. There's some great articles online you can look up that details how the art was thought to be lost... only to be found after decades. They also go into the mystery of re-doing Superman's face. Why and when was it done, and most importantly... who did it.
