Description

In 2016, the Avengers were undergoing yet another reboot, with Mark Waid writing Vol 6 of their adventures. Concurrently, Waid also wrote five issues of a "retroboot" series with art by Barry Kitson, confusingly numbered 1.1 through 5.1 and published in late 2016 and early 2017. That story was a flashback to the 1960s. It picked up after Avengers #16, in which Captain America leads a new team consisting of former villains Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver.

In this scene which opens issue #2.1 Four Avengers protect a beachside crowd from a giant Atlas-style monster. The speedster can be seen as a blur zipping from the middle right across the page and up the right front paw of the beast. I bought this 8x11" page in a small lot of unlabeled Kitson art, and it took some sleuthing for me to understand what the inscription in the upper left corner meant.
