Description

A sports editorial cartoon raising the question of whether television was good or bad for baseball. A theme debated throughout the 50's.

The Sporting News published this piece in August 1950. And the artist, William (Bill) T. O'Brien Sr. was a sports cartoonist for the Chicago Sun-Times until 1951. He then moved over the Chicago's Tribune newspaper, where he became editorial art director. He also contributed his art to The Sporting News.

I think that a lot of the people who grew up with the pain of the Great Depression had a negative view of what was risky, new, and of change. The illustration is compelling as this new medicine loomed large and the cartooning of the patient shows that the prognosis wasn't good. They were on the wrong side of history, but it is a great reminder that every step forward requires risk.
