Description

A Man Called Savage Unpublished Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-20-71. This appears to be a try-out page for a daily comic strip based on Gil Kane's character, Savage. The character originally appeared in His Name Is... Savage!, published by Adventure House Press in 1968. The logos are very similar. The strip is noted on the side as "#18 - A Man Called 'Savage' Promo #A-1". Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 25.5" x 17.5". Tanned with edge and corner wear. Signed "Ton� Specter" in the middle panel, but "by Tony J. Specter" in the logo. This was a pseudonym for Tony DiPaola who had done a large amount of work for Western/Gold Key. Sorry for the bad photo, it is still in the packaging I received it in.

This does a great job of getting the Gil Kane look down. Very dynamic action with those raised nostrils. Packed with his take charge street action in urban decay!
