Description

It looks like I've hit a Conan mood here! Oh, well...

Being the first of a new generation of Marvel magazines, Savage Tales had quite a convoluted publishing history, accumulating all sorts of problems along the way, from its (slightly) more adult content (for the times) to more operational distribution issues.

The fifth issue was also the last to feature Conan who would soon appear in the more renowned Savage Sword of Conan (Yes, it was certainly simpler to add Conan to the title, if only due to his massive success by then...).

But, back to Savage Tales. Up until then, it had been graced with some of the most fantastic art by Barry Windsor-Smith, Gil Kane and Neal Adams. And this very issue would see the publication of the only story ever illustrated by this most cosmic of teams, namely Jim Starlin and Al Milgrom!

Talk about a feast for the eyes!

Fresh from their (original) stint on Captain Marvel and soon to embark for the stars alongside Adam Warlock, they did find time to come up with this unique take on our favourite barbarian who, as it is, enjoys a rare romantic moment... Well, I suppose this is what passes as romanticism in Cimmeria...

Strong on innuendo and subtle hints (sword-wielding & al), this is obviously a carefully-constructed page with briliant use of zipatone whose various textures are put to optimal use to enhance the night ambiance.

I'm obviously not disputing their choice to expand their cosmic awareness capacities, but I do feel this story clearly demonstrates how strong the Starlin/Milgrom team was on Conan and I just wish they had done more!

"Yup, I do like you."  :)  I get it!  Exquisite storytelling and pure illustration.  Love that transition starting from the half head shot (that expression!) to the last panel.  Sweet example.  Big congrats, Al!

A study in seduction! And it blends well with the rest of the story too (up to its risque last words...). Thanks a lot!

Why not to love her, after all? ;) One of the sexiest Conan pages I've ever seen, with a special mention for panels 4 to 9!

Thanks Davide! Who said Conan did not have any hedonistic view on life?

I love how her fingers dance upon his broadsword and then it's stuck to the ground when she's finshed handling it.  Simple and effectively raw animal magnetism that hits upon some cosgasmic themes in this page.

Now that I think of it, the girl Naia seems to bear more than a passing resemblance to Heater Delight, the sly courtisane that duly tricked Pip the Troll in Warlock 12. Small wonder, isn't it!...

Thanks Kirk! This is, after all, a very simple sequence, but it is beautifully told...

Thanks Rick! Jim Steranko had pioneered this technique a few years before to sashay around the Comics Cose limitations, but it is also a very efficient storytelling approach!

Thanks Scott! It's true that the Captain Marvel/Warlock cycles tend to dominate this period of Jim Starlin so much that his other works get overlooked. But, it's clear he could do no wrong, whatever the story...

A truly fantastic page. I remember they reprinted this in the regular Conan comic as a fill-in (something in the back of mind says it was issue 64 but I could be wrong) and had to edit this page to make it less, um, racy. I had my eye on this page too, but knew I did not have much of a chance. Thank you for posting.

Thanks Simon! I have not seen the reprint, but I can imagine it had to be slightly modified to accommodate 4-color publication... Even though I think nobody had to stretch imagination too far to figure out how things turned out with the various ladies (in distress or not) that Conan kept meeting throughout his adventures... Savagz sword, indeed...

Wow! What a gorgeous Stalin/Milgrom page! I love the way Starlin kept changing the POV from panel to panel. The multiple close-ups he used for the seduction scenes is so cinematic! Beautiful inks by Milgrom with a very creative use of different screen tones. It's a beauty, congrats!

Thanks Bill! I agree, of course, this is all I like in a Starlin/Milgrom page!
