DescriptionI am going to repeat what I have already said elsewhere because I can't state it any better (not at the moment anyway). For me at least, Step By Bloody Step was as epic as God Country as far as miniseries go. It was (no pun intended) in fact a step beyond what any of us is used to - inasmuch as it had no dialogue whatsoever. This is not to detract from the input of the writer and, indeed, colorist as well as graphic designer. However, by the very nature of the project itself, the artist's contribution, in my view at least, was paramount. And Matías literally knocked this series out of the ballpark. This brilliant Uruguayan artist has created a masterpiece that literally speaks for itself whilst simultaneously lends itself to a number of possible interpretations (depending on the perspective of the reader concerned). This is - without exaggeration - a monumental achievement - which prompted me to do something I hardly ever do (because of financial cost, if nothing else), which was to purchase the entire final issue of this fantastic series. I hope to upload unwatermarked scans of the cover as well as pages of this issue in due course. In the meantime, I cannot recommend this series more highly. It has just been collected into a trade paperback and I was also very fortunate to land the cover. There was a French edition too (which I also purchased). However, I had wanted to see what it would look like not just in black and white against a (bloody) red background (which was awesome in itself) but also in color. Hence, the present piece - which is an awesome color recreation that (consistently with the entire (wordless) book) speaks for itself. Social/Sharing |

I feel the same as you with this series. The man put pen to paper an entire book with no discernible words and it was a masterpiece full stop. Congrats on this piece and your entire SBBS collection. Good stuff.

It leaves a lasting impression with the blood orange palette! The different values at play over the base white or black ink provide an atmospheric tone of this magical hour of dawn or dusk. It's no mistake that this color was used in the different covers of the series. The color is symbolic of a new day, the warmth of friendship, and the idyllic landscapes that this story has an abundance of. Stunning world building and levels of depth created by Bergara.

Many thanks, Marcus! Yes, especially given the absence of dialog, colors become very important. Hence, I wanted to see what the artist's take would be in this alternative recreation.

Many thanks, Ian! It is a powerful piece and I really like how the artist provided this alternative interpretation in this recreation by way of his color pallette.
