DescriptionExciting! This 13" x 16 1/8" illustration by Yuko Shimizu was published in the January 2017 issue of Wired Magazine, which was a special science fiction issue containing a series of short stories illustrated by different artists. The piece accompanies a story called 'The Black Box' by Malka Older. The story can be read here: https://www.wired.com/2016/12/malka-older-the-black-box/ and the piece is among the work on Yuko Shimizu's website with process images (including those for her digital adjustments of the piece for publication), which I was particularly pleased to see as I am a sucker for process. If you want to take a look, here's the URL for that also: https://yukoart.com/work/wired-sci-fi-issue-black-box/#main I was immediately drawn to this dynamic artwork because I have had a VERY similar image floating around my head for years, particularly in relation to matters of progressing technology and the dubious nature of privacy, information, and reality in this context. I hadn't read the story when I bought the piece, but it is about memory and also how our intentions with technology are not always as forward-thinking as they seem, so this is a perfect first Shimizu for my collection. In addition to the subject matter, what I love about Shimizu's work is 1) the way she works her cultural heritage into her pieces, 2) the way she teaches and explains her work (check out her Instagram @yukoart), and 3) her obviously incredible technique with the brush and the amazing lines she creates. Ms. Shimizu credited David Moretti and Allie Fisher with art direction of the piece on her site, so I wanted to extend those credits here as well. Social/Sharing |

The swirling energy is all consuming and adding the oblong dots for some Kirby Krackle effect is gives it so much more momentum behind it. The hair getting wildly lifted also gives off the tornado vortex effect!
