Description

Sometimes you just need a little hit of Immonen / von Grawbadger super-heroics to get you through your day, right?  I know I do (although I suspect Vulture may disagree here...  BIRD STRIKE!!)

The Venom costume “template” has cropped up in many different iterations, variants, and contexts since the classic original, of course, but Mark Bagley’s use of it when designing the look of Ultimate Spider-Woman may very well be my favorite application of it (with 616 design roots in Julia Carpenter, but standing apart as something its own).  With Jessica’s long, wavy hair, the costume was sassy, stylish, and sans symbiote. Three artists drew it towards the end of the original Ultimate Spider-Man run: Bagley, David Lafuente, and Stuart Immonen, and it was always a showstopper.

And speaking of showstoppers, the composition of this splash qualifies. It’s laid out so your eye can easily travel in the opposite direction it -should-; from bottom right to upper left. Your eye falls first on Jess and follows the angle of her legs (and the “hit flare”) right up the swoop of Vulture’s wing to land on his recoil in the upper left corner. And the placement of the flare really shows the force of the blow: with it being so far away from where Vulture’s head is in the frame, the impact of the punch is integrated right into the flow and overall composition of the panel (which -includes- space allotted for a huge and satisfying “KARACK!” sound effect placement on the published page). Deceptively complex panel engineering in the mighty Marvel manner by Immonen and von Grawbadger.  KARACK!

Sincerely grateful to add this sweeping beauty to the gallery. Thank you, Wade, and to Jason at Essential Sequential!

Couldn't agree with you more on all accounts! I greatly enjoyed the Spider-Woman design/character in Ultimate ever since I first saw her. This is such a great dynamic Immonen/WvG splash from his run, love it! I'm tempted to read the whole series again (for a 4th time!) while I recover from surgery, it's such a comfort read for me. congrats on this one!

Regarding  "Your eye falls first" description, mine fell on her boobs but I am a shallow individual. Not out of my skull I hasten to add, they merely bulged a bit at the sight of a swinging Spider-Woman. Not swinging in the sixties or seventies sense presumably on her part.

The artistic team has room to fly here - the full figures allow Immonen to do his thing, and the costume designs give Grawbadger license to SLAY! Congrats on this beauty!

Fantastic (if busy in terms of composition) splash by Immonen and WVG. And you are right, it IS a great costume.

Congratulations on a truly terrific splash page!  Thank you, as always, for including the informative and insightful description of the artwork.  I had stopped buyiung comics when this issue of Ultimate Spider-Man was published, but seeing this great piece and reading your write-up makes me want to pick up the back issues or some tpb's!

Everybody's talking Spidey
I don't fear the bird they displaying,
Only the web hold of my line.
People stop I’m walking,
I can't see their faces,
Only the windows of her eyes.

I'm kicking where the sun stopped shining
Thru' Karacking pain,
Going where Grawbadger suits my clothes,
Drafting off of the Bendis wind,
Stuart on summer breeze
And skipping over emotion like a stone.

Really cool costume on Jessica Drew for sure. I love that she leaves a cutout for her hair to flow (even though doing so would constantly get her in major trouble during combat. But let's just agree to suspend our disbelief on that one!), as flowing hair always adds to the beauty of the body in action. I have to say though, that contrary to my thoughts on her costume, I hate the Vulture's duds. I didn't even recognize him and thought it was some random "Fly Man" character of recent vintage. The swinging pose is fabulous at any rate and I really like the piece just for that. A hearty congratulations on another great Immonen add!

Ooof! There goes one avian jawline. Very dynamic, with the circle kick front and centre. In true Marvel style. Nice splash!

I really enjoyed the Ultimate Spider-Woman design- the flowing hair and giant white eyes looked really cool together, and Immonen does it justice here.  Congrats! (on picking this up... and reminding me of my regret for selling my two Bagley pages with her)
