DescriptionWith only a few years of making comics Juliette Collet has managed to make some of the most beautiful, inventive and personal comics of recent memory. A lot of her stories feature her as a character but she is smart enough to steer clear of a lot of trappings of typical autobio comics. Part of why I like Collet is that she seems to want to express emotional honesty more than just show emotional situations, which is what I see in a lot of other comics. A voice still growing and expanding and all of it is just extremely exciting. What I love about this two-pager titled “Beating the Shit Out of My Younger Self in a Bathroom,” is that it starts off with the title which is funny and intriguing and long then panel by panel it gets increasingly more violent and visceral until the end where you have both of her selves looking directly at you. This is a deeply personal statement expressed silently through action and cartooning. In Comics Blogger #8 Collet stated, “When I wrote that comic… I didn’t even see it as being that dark. But in retrospect it was super dark. I was not happy and I didn’t realize it. There was a lot of shit that needed to go somewhere. And I felt like an idiot. I felt like a fool. So I drew that comic, but I didn’t even know.” Originally featured in Quelqu’un a large format 40-page screen printed book, that was an edition of 36, this story was also in Collet’s then ongoing series Blah Blah Blah was on many year-end lists for 2022 and 2023 including The Comics Journal Yearbook: Best of 2022’s top ten comics. This page was also featured as the lead image in an interview with Collet in issue #310 of The Comics Journal as well as the aforementioned Comics Blogger #8 . Infintiely fascinating as there would be times of self doubt in all of us at one time or another who would recognize the severity of how we habitually abuse ourselves either emotionally or by consuming things. Glad to see it represented in some form to know we are not alone.
