Cover of episode #291 of the early German science fiction pulp series TERRA. Published under the title 'Der 38. Sprung' (The 38th Junp) on July 5th, 1963.

Gouache on illustration board.

'TERRA UTOPISCHE ROMANE' was a German Science Fiction pulp series published from 1957 to 1968 in 555 episodes by the publishing house Moewig in Munich, and launched in competition to the 'UTOPIA' series. TERRA became one of the most popular SF series in Germany in 1950-70 next to UTOPIA and PERRY RHODAN.

Much like a christening of a boat, this launch of a ship into the wider expanse holds just as much fascination for the mechanisms surrounding it as the ship itself.
