DescriptionOh no! Members of the JLA have switched universes with their evil counterparts in the Crime Syndicate! Ultraman gives a nasty heat-ray embrace to the statue of Justice atop the U.S. Capitol on Earth-2, which is what the villains call the main DC universe in this Grant Morrison story. In the distance, the Martian Manhunter races to confront the villain. Frank Quitely took liberties with the design of the statue. On our Earth, the U.S. Capitol is topped by a nineteen foot tall of Freedom with sword and wreath, wearing a plumed helmet. Ultraman would have looked small embracing that statue, so Quitely designs something more huggable, though it would not have been visible from the ground. He also changes the statue from "Freedom" to "Justice" to fit the story's "justice vs injustice" theme better. See the "additional images" for a picture of the Freedom statue. Quitely gave plenty of marginal instructions to the colorist, a job whose possibilities and responsibilities expanded dramatically in the Copper Age with the adoption of computer shading. The "target" symbol at the top of the page shows that there was an overlay surprint for some of the color art, but it has been lost. I had been looking a while for a good page with both pencils and inks by Quitely, and Ultraman is the perfect subject for his distinctive style. I also don't take it for granted that a page from 2000 has word balloons on it. Social/Sharing |

A great prestige format book that rode on the Morrison JLA success and it was the return of their collaboration since Flex Mentallo. This shows Quitely was ready to move into larger scale superhero books and his Superman design would come in handy down the line.
