Description
Due to a buying glitch on his site (someone else simultaneously purchased a VERY awesome looking Orion) I was able to choose a character for Paul to draw. I agonized over this choice, but definitely wanted a Kirby interpretation and a character that he hadn’t tackled before. As a kid, I didn’t connect with Machine Man (or X-51 / Mister Machine as he was introduced in the Marvel 2001: A Space Odyssey series in 1977.) Kirby’s art seemed clunky, and I preferred tighter more lithe characters (SEE: Paul Smith.) But of course as an adult I got it. The best recent description was someone referencing Kirby’s style as Brutalist.

Well Paul nailed this one, just nailed it. SO dynamic and so Kirby! That hand! Those few squiggly ink reflections! And the human-like face plate off, revealing the X-51 face!

X-51 (Machine Man) used to wild out and this energy is here! I could not be more pleased. Thanks Paul!

Lush inks that Smith does to recapture the Kirby/Royer look of Machine Man.  Very stylish and bold as Smith wants to impart to you that X-51 power!

As you said Marcus! "Impart" is absolutley a good choice of description. Imparting brutalism!

AWESOME. I love giving artists something outside their regular wheelhouse - and your choice is inspired!

Loooove X-51 (though I'm more partial to the Earth X version Alex Ross conceived).

Paul rocked this piece- congrats!

Many thanks Jason! Had to look up Ross' interpretation. A bit on the Rom side, but I quite like where he takes characters. Thanks for that head's up!

Fantastic Machine Man illustration from Paul Smith!  Beautiful pinup reminiscent of Jack Kirby and Mike Royer's work on Machine Man. Smith combines a very Kirby-esque pose with Mike Royer-like inks for a winning combination. Great pick-up, congrats!

Paul said it was his second attempt. The first drawing was full length but he said he was disappointed, it wasn't exciting enough! Not super familiar with the character he took som liberties which I love! Wilding out but keeping the Kirby essense. So glad I went with this request!
