Description
I was so sad to learn that Joe Matt had passed. I never met him, but as he was working on the commission piece that I also have on display in this gallery we exchanged quite a few messages, and my impression was of a delightful, warm and fun guy. With me he was definitely NOT as stingy as he portrayed himself in the comics! His legendary procrastination I did get to know though: it took him forever to do the piece, and occasionally (when I asked how it was going, and sometimes unprompted), he would write that he was ALMOST done and apologize for procrastinating etc. Then he would say a few words about something else he was working on, or mention some pop culture reference that was on his mind, and I would reply in the same vein. And then several weeks would pass and there would be new iteration. When he eventually did send the commission, it was accompanied by this little doodle.

I'm glad I got around to write him and praise his work before it was too late, and I now value my brief correspondence with him as much as the commission itself.

This sketch in many ways is more personal than the commission can be.  Very nice to see him still waving hi to us through his artwork.

Thanks for posting this delightful doodle and for your remembrances in the description.  I met him briefly at SDCC back in the 90s and he was the warm and fun guy you describe

What an absolutely adorable little drawing and touching story behind its origin. I read the last issue of Peepshow that came out recently and it is very sad that there will be no more comics from Joe Matt. I hear that he died at his drawing desk which is ironic as his great friend Chester Brown wrote a comic where it was he who died at his drawing table. None of us knows what tomorrow brings. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for the thoughtful comment. I had forgotten about that Chester Brown comic but now that you mentioned it I remember that I have it somewhere.

The three-pager appears in "The Little Man" collection, and is part 2 of "The Weird Canadian Artist," which is obscene but also funny and honest. I can imagine Joe Matt reading it when it first came out – it is dated 1991 – and enjoying it; it would have been right down his street. Thank you for your reply.
