This is really cool for fans of The Shadow. But what I never understood is why the Archie version was completely differing in appearance. Did the copyrights somehow fall into the public domain for a short time during the 1960's?

Apparently at the time, Archie and Belmont books were owned by the same entity and had purchased the rights to publish the Shadow. And it appears that Archie Comics were not sure how to handle the Shadow and were trying to ride the wave of super-hero comics.
