DescriptionPublished 1963 by IPCDr. Deutz written by Kenneth Bulmer. The Steel Claw was a long running serial in the British weekly adventure comic Valiant. It debuted in the October 6 1963 issue written by Bulmer and drawn by Blasco. The protagonist was Louis Crandell an assistant to the scientist Professor Barringer, until he lost his right hand which he replaced with a prosthetic metal hand. In a laboratory accident, he received a high voltage electric shock which turned him invisible for a limited period of time, with the exception of his steel claw. Initially, he used his power to steal but then became a crime fighter, eventually enlisting in the British Secret Service. In this, his third adventure, Dr. Deutz tries to duplicate the Steel Claw power, but his experiment turns him into an evil beast like Jekyll and Hyde. The beast uses a fake steel claw to divert suspicion to the Steel Claw for his crimes. In this episode, the Steel Claw's invisibility is wearing off and the police is hot on his trail. Professor Barringer's niece, Terry Gray, who believes in his innocence, helps him escape from the police and they head to Dr. Deutz for help, not realizing that he is the one to blame. This strip was reprinted in Vulcan weekly in 1975, in the Steel Claw #4 by Quality Periodicals in 1987 and in the Hard cover collection 'The Vanishing Man' in 2005. Social/Sharing |

It's just an illustration wonderland
Just one more fairytale about the British
Drawing by the art Jesus
Life is so cruel
Easy living when you're Dr. Deutz
But title page was the first time
It only took about a half a minute
With Terry Gray
It was child's play
The odds turn out even when you're invisible with the
Cold law, Steel Claw
Try to get indoors, you find the lock is on the door
Well, I say, no way, no way!
Don't try to get in or there'll be hell to pay
I don't know who's right, who's wrong
It really doesn't matter when you're lying with Barringer
It's a Crandell
A Blasco battle with garden wall
It's what you get for messing with the Steel Claw

Wow, I always liked Blasco's work, but I never realized he was doing this high level illustrative stuff in the early 60's! This is at least as good, if not better, as the best stuff being done by the Big Two at the time!
