DescriptionThis is probably the last original art that I am getting this year, but it is a nice way to close out 2023. Paul Smith, as you probably know, is my favorite X-Men artist. I noticed that he was doing commissions again about a month ago and I contacted him through his website.I proposed two ideas to him and let Smitty choose which one he wanted to do -- Wolverine vs. Mystique or Cyclops vs. Magneto. Two days after Thanksgiving, Smitty reached out to me and told he would do the Cyclops piece and not the Wolverine/Mystique one. After sending me four thumbnails to choose from and allowing me to pick my favorite, Paul Smith got to work and completed my commission in about two weeks. This piece is 11" x 17." Cyclops never fought Magneto during Paul Smith's legendary run on Uncanny X-Men, but if they had clashed, I am sure it would have looked something like this. Smitty is an incredible artist and he has always been generous with me. Happy holidays to all of my friends on this website! Social/Sharing |

Talk about going out with a bang. What a great way to close your 2023 collecting year. Such an incredible and dramatic match up. Just love the work Smitty did on all the debris. Wow!

Dream matchup! Leader vs leader showdown! Smith not only gets the form right, but enevlopes the scene with all that extra junkyard metal debris that must have been a blast to for him to detail out piece by piece to make the drawing more interesting! If I were Magneto, I'd just close Cyclops' visor up so he would be blind. Bad guys don't have to fight fair and Erik would hit a guy with glasses.

Thank you, Marcus! And I agree; Cyclops is probably doomed...

Thank you, Chuck! I agree that Smitty draws the best Cyclops. Paul has said that Scott is the X-Man he identifies with the most.

Thank you, my friend! As Marcus noted above, Cyclops and his ruby quartz visor are probably headed for a very unpleasant experience!

One of Smith's recent best and that's saying something! Strong classic vibe mixed with some great killer detail on the machine pieces here! Congrats!

Thank you, my friend! Paul Smith still retains the ability to make the jaw drop and I was very lucky to get this piece.

Fabulous Paul Smith commission! Love the poses here--Cyclops looks like he really could take out Magneto. And it's cool the way Magneto is pulling up a stream of metallic objects that he's obviously going to dump on poor Cyclops! Beautiful inks as usual. Great pick-up!

Thank you for the comment, Bill! I think the "one minute later" version of this commission would have Cyclops buried under a pile of metal rubble.
