80. William Henry Hunt, Roses. c. 1835-40

Hunt only painted about 10 formal still life watercolors of this type, with flowers in a vase set against a neutral background (as opposed to his later innovative background type of moss-covered dirt). Most of this type of still lifes by Hunt are in museums in England, and this is one of the few types of Hunt watercolors which was missing in my collection.

Most Americans think of the form of hybrid tea roses rather than traditional English roses, as shown here and in other paintings of roses painted by Hunt.
