Description
A very early Al Williamson/Frank Frazetta collaboration, from John Wayne Comics 3 (1950); an era when the Duke and western heroics ruled the collective conscience of an entire nation. Frazetta is credited as the inker on this story, however, the exact distribution of labor is unclear. Undoubtedly, both of these artistic titans would elevate their skillsets in the next few years, there is surely an historical importance to their early work and collaboration, as available examples are few. Two legends of the industry rendering the Duke dealing out justice with his granite fists. Beautifully drawn and choreographed fight sequence with John Wayne throughout every panel. Over the years, I've looked at numerous pages from this series, but would be hard-pressed to find an example with more action-packed panels. Even if you're not a fan of westerns...who doesn't love a good fist fight?!
Al and Fritz ride again! Yee-haaaaw!

Ink on illustration board 15 x 20 in. See additional images for original panel seven.

What a cool fight page. I have the splash for this story that leads straight into this fight.

Hey Benno...and what a great splash page you have! I've always dug these old western books and am happy that many of the greats were a part of it!

But. . .where's Walter Brennan?  The first four panels are worth the price of admission

Historic importance indeed.  Another fine example from this under rated title when giants walked the earth.  This is beautifully laid out.

The feathery line work is too die for in this page.   It is Everton in a page, design,  figure work,  and great inking.   The 7th panel is interesting.   I wonder what the story is... especially with sneak peak.    Golden age goodness,  congrats!
