DescriptionAvengers #2 p9 - Jack Kirby - First Appearance Space Phantom; Hulk and Rick JonesThis four-panel page features the Space Phantom shifting in and out of the Hulk as he explains how his powers to displace people to Limbo works. In this issue, the Hulk leaves the Avengers because of the taunting he received from his fellow Avengers while controlled by the Space Phantom. This issue was the last issue I acquired when I was a kid completing my back issue run from 1-100, so it holds a special place in my heart as well. The artwork looks as fresh as the day it was inked. Kirby's early three-toed Hulk is also a favorite of mine - so much so that I even made an action figure of him! Social/Sharing |

Incredibly special. I'm so in love with that middle panel. But honestly, the entire page is spectacular. Congratulations on this beauty!

1) I never did know what the Space Phantom really was
2) I never noticed the Hulk was ever drawn with only three toes.
This page is all kind of cool. Congratulations on getting it!!

A most classic piece, and every panel's got something to see! The King, doing what he does! So awesome seeing his Hulk in OA form. Big congrats, Andrew!

The foundation of the Marvel Universe solidifies with these early issues with the team up / crossover of the major characters of the line! This page shows the tensions the clash of characters that would cause. Kirby is masterful in making all of it so cohesive.

What a stunning page from Avengers #2! Gorgeous art from Jack Kirby and Paul Reinman with the Hulk and Rick Jones and the Space Ghost! What a treasure! I loved these early issues of Avengers--The creation of that team was one of the defining moments of the Silver Age. And you own a piece of that history. Serious congratulations, my friend.

I had a page from this story Andy. Never let this awesome page go. Also, I always loved the psychotic look of evil on the Space Phantom's face when he appeared. Congrats!

Greg, thanks for the comment! This is one page that really makes me smile every time I look at it. Agree about Space Phantom's evilness - never really understood his beef with the Avengers, but it carried over into much later storylines as well. - Andy
