Description

Winner of the 2021 Harvey Award for book of the year, "The Magic Fish" by Trung Le Nguyen (a.k.a. Trungles) is one of my favorite graphic novels from the last few years. A coming of age and coming out story told from the viewpoint of Tien, the son of Vietnamese immigrants, the book focuses on Tien's and his mother's shared love of fairy tales as a form of communication and ultimately explores themes of family bonds and cultural and sexual identity.

Nguyen's distinctive and whimsical art is gorgeous (nobody does better hair, in my opinion) and is perfectly suited to the fairy tale themes of the story. Suffice to say, I'm very happy to have a page from the book.

The art does play with and even transcends the medium. It's dreamlike qualities delights through its illusrative design and light hearted feel akin to Little Nemo in Slumberland.
