Description

A rare animation cel from the pilot season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Fred Wolf Films), episode 5: "Shredder and Splintered" or "Shredded and Splintered" or "The Shredder Is Splintered." Again, I've seen it written so many ways. Without seeing the final draft of David Wise's script, I guess I'll never know for sure.

In this scene, Shredder gets the drop on Splinter, who was sneaking around the Technodrome looking for the Retro-Mutagen gun. In an unusual instance for the series, Shredder actually uses a sword for this battle, yet Splinter's trusty wooden walking stick somehow is up to the challenge. Maybe Saki neglected to keep his blade sharp? All things considered, it's one of the greatest moments for the long-running cartoon.

In this case, the supplied background is drastically different the original episode context, making it look like the old rivals are facing off near harbor port. These cels were sold framed in mats and protective plastic sleeves at various toy and department stores throughout the early 1990s under the "Animation Art" label, and it is rare to see any Season 1 cels included in this promotion. This cel was scanned inside the sealed plastic sleeve, so image quality suffers a bit. Also attached is a screencap from the VUDU digital version, showing the approximate cel in its final form at around the 16 minute, 48 second mark.

Beautiful cel! Looks awkward with the new background, but that's part of the charm of the times.
