DescriptionHaving grown up collecting comics in the early 70s, there were four artist/character combinations that made up my personal Mt. Rushmore... Adams on Batman, Bernie on Swamp Thing, BWS on Conan, and Michael Kaluta on The Shadow. I managed to find examples of the others over the past 40 years, but the Kaluta Shadow always eluded me.It's understandably difficult -- I mean there's a total of 100 pages from his first run. I finally added another (non-Shadow) Kaluta piece to my collection a few years ago, and it's a more than adequate representation of his work. But then this became available. Kaluta was the perfect artist for this moody noir vibe. I realize it wasn't a commercial hit at the time, but I dug it. Social/Sharing |

So much atmosphere from Kaluta's play with shadows and fog! The Shadow Knows and so do astute collectors about Kaluta's run!

Great page. This series, helmed by Kaluta, O'Neil and with help from Wrightson, was one of my all time favorites. It did a great job of bringing us back to that bygone era where pulps were king. Congrats!

Full credits to the powers that were at DC this time for having cast Mike Kaluta instead of some of the heavy-hitters of the moment. The highly atmospheric, tension-filled, nightmarish mood he creates brings back the Shadow to all new fields of excellence. Obviously, finishing his too-shirt run with a ninja story, long before Frank Miller, definitely contributed to both the character's and the artist's legend! Great pick!

Kaluta's Shadow was ethereal. The camera perspective makes the Shadow flow panel to panel enhanced by the use of blacks. There should be an artist's edition of his Shadow run.
