THE FOUR MINUTE SMILE

Here's an odd one. A single page comic strip advertisement for Rowntrees Fruit Gums from 1970. Drawn in a singular Monty-python/Underground comic style, this was, I think, number 3 of a series of comic ads that were placed on the coloured back page of children's comics in the early 1970s (I've seen them on 'Lion', 'Thunder', and 'TV Comic'). They were apparently based on a concurrent TV Ad campaign, but, sadly, I can find none of those ads online.

Obviously very faded indeed - the colours would have been inks, which are very susceptible to UV light - this is the kind of comics work that would have been junked almost immediately; this one was saved, and, according to its dedication on the reverse, was gifted to 'Tom' by 'Tony & Denise' in 2001, 30 years after it was made. According to where the piece was originally framed, they must have lived near St Columb Major in Cornwall. Newquay is loooong way from London, where I'm assuming the piece was made (the advertising agency for Rowntrees in the early 1970s was Garland Compton, since subsumed by Saatchi), and how it got there is another mystery. Circumstantial evidence might point to a printing company based in Cornwall, china clay being a key part of the magazine printing process...

I'd love to know the artist; again any help?

Yes, just a really fun piece to own. And Fruit Gums were my favourite sweets as a kid!
