Description
I can't say I caught this series when it came out; I only looked at it very recently. The X-Men '97 Animated Series hinted that this mini would be a featured arch in season 2.

The story covers the beginnings of Apocalypse, his life in Egypt, and his battle with the Kang variant, Rama-Tut. Both Apocalypse and Kang are featured on the cover.

The Egyptian border and costume design are a real stand out!

People overlooked it back then because it was a villain's origin tale mini series.  Apocalypse in the X-Men movie certainly helped, but the success of X-Men '97 and the after credit scene with the promise of getting into this storyline has supercharged demand and appreciation for the series.   It is both an artifact of the times and as a definitive origin tale of Apocalypse.

Beautiful cover and series by Pollina. He really got to run with his artistic style on this one. Watching the final scene of X-Men ’97 I felt like that Lionardo DiCaprio pointing meme, drink in hand, thinking I know this one, that’s Adam Pollina’s Apocalypse!

This original is so well detailed. What a shame the colorist decided to try to be the star. Love the hatching and texturing. Sculptural.

Man, a rad '90s piece no doubt.  Imagery-wise, OG Egyptian En Sabah Nur is hard to top.  Witness exhibit A with Pollina killing it.  And you got some Kang, too!  Congrats!
