Description
I've admired Bernet's art since I first became aware of him but haven't been able to get any art within my price range until now. This was done when Bernet was 30 but then according to Wiki he was assisting his father on his humorous strip at 15 and took over when he died, but then quit because he wanted to do more serious art. The boldness yet looseness of his execution is dazzling. What can really only be seen in person are some bold pencil lines that show through the ink at the right angle. They reveal that he would set down certain outlines or indicators (Andrax's muscle next to his right shoulder in the 2nd panel has a simple mark on the left side). The glare in the close up of the monster is the only photo where I was able to capture this (and it isn't really the best example). The glare you see is pencil. Online translations for the text are:
A bloodthirsty monster awakens in the depths and devours its victims in a matter of seconds.
"Are you all right, Andrax?" "Heavens! Behind you!"
Holernes reacts with lightning speed.
But the monster finds another victim...
There seems to be no end to the terrifying battle...
"Good, Andrax!"
...until Andrax can finally free himself.

Great power and energy to Bernet's linework to show man vs nature in all its raw glory!

Great looking page.  You can see perhaps some simularities with Joe Kubert's work here.
