Joe Smith, aside from being an astounding artist wtih many great accomplishments, was also a family friend, who is greatly missed. Joe did this piece for me when he was in his eighties, shortly after painting the first 12 trading cards for the first set of Topps Trading Cards. George Lucas purchased all 12 of the originals. Joe was responisble for the Ben Hur Movies posters as well as many other Hollywood movie posters.

Joe was a great artist & a really nice guy. My father worked on many of his classic cars & knew him most of his life. I went over to his house several times. He was always working on something! I saw the original paintings he did for the Star Wars set. My dad tooks pictures of them that I still have. My dad almost bought a few of those paintings. He only wanted 1 or two of them & Joe wanted to sell them as a set...lucky for George Lucas!

Wow. That's beautiful. Most modern artists lack this respect for subtle shading.
