Description

Steve was envisioning a more realistic looking version of Brownhole Jones washed up on a beach.

Who should Steve turn to... but the godfather of pirate art, Howard Pyle,
for inspiration.

I'm not sure if Steve ever got past this first page.

Brownhole Jones was created by Steve Mannion.

It's a style you don't often see from Mannion.  He pulls it off with the strained emotion in the main panel.

Wow! that's really something different for Steve Mannion! I love the Howard Pyle reference. I've always admired Pyle's work in those classic adventure novels and I like the idea of borrowing from his style. And Steve does capture something of Pyle's illustration style here. Love the image of the shipwrecked man on a beach and the young woman finding him, and cradling his head on her shoulder. It's a very sweet page, very different for Steve. I also love the rope-like border, another nod to classic book illustrations. Fantastic pick-up, congrats!
