Description

From the second season Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Fred Wolf Films) episode "It Came from Beneath the Sewers," here's an original animation cel of an historic moment in TMNT cartoon history: April O'Neil and Shredder have their first personal interaction! And of course... Shredder takes the opportunity to capture her as his "turtle bait" hostage. As hard as it is to believe the two never officially meet until the eighth episode of the series, I think it's true, and was first pointed out to be by the "Turtle Recall" podcast by Jason and Anna Sohiel. Despite the entirety of the pilot season and the 2nd season's previous two episodes, April and Shredder only interact through proxies or television signals.

This is a painted acetate cel layered over a background print. In this case, the the supplied background is different than the episode context, changing out the context of a scientific warehouse in favor of a stone wall. These cels were sold framed in mats and protective plastic sleeves at various toy and department stores throughout the early 1990s under the "Animation Art" label. This cel was scanned without the plastic seal, providing a clear image of the art. Also attached is a screencap from the VUDU/Fandango at Home digital copy, showing the approximate cel in its final form at around the 14 minute, 06 second mark.

So great! It's two characters on one cel so their interaction is seamless by immortalizing this encounter.
