After Prince Rudolf's romantic attachment to his maid Klara turns sexual, for some reason he seems surprised by the news:
“Mayerling, July 1888”
“Klara... this last month has been the happiest of my life. Since I met you, everything has changed, and to see my own happiness in your eyes is... Klara? Klara, is there something wrong?”
“I... Rudolf, I... something happened, but I'm afraid to celebrate.”
“What happened?”
“There... I... am expecting a child!”
“What?”
“I shouldn't have told you, I knew it...”
“No, don't be like that, wait... I just thought there was nothing between you and your husband anymore.”
“My husband? He barely speaks to me. Alcohol makes him not want to do anything, except hit me.”
“I'll have him arrested! He must never raise a hand to you again!”
“Don't you understand? The child is yours, only yours...”
“Mine? But... that's wonderful!”
“Rudolf... you're so naive. What will we do? You're the heir to the throne. It's all so complicated. We can't. We can't!”
Though this part of the story is fictional, Klara is a historical figure; see the additional image for her photograph.
