Description

Beautiful cover for the Ballantine collection that put Weinbaum on the map for a new generation of fans. This illustrates "Valley of Dreams," the sequel to Weinbaum's famous "A Martian Odyssey." The Martian Tweel shows his Earth visitors that its people have known about our people for a rather long time, and in fact visited us. (Von Daniken hadn't been born yet!)

People both over- and underrate Weinbaum. He was certainly the best SF author of his brief window in history, and while his stuff creaks pretty badly today, who knows how he would have grown? Instead, dead of cancer at 33. A terrible pity.

Thsi painting plays right into all those wild theories about the Egyptian civiliation and culture tied to alien visitors! Even History Channel caved and started showing those shows. This parallel of their appreciation for the arts really gets me thinking if they have their own version of the Hulk 181 cover.

Great find! I love Weinbaum! In his very brief career he invented many SF tropes that still influence authors decades later.
