Description

Latest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #248, teaming Batman with Dr Mid-Nite, adapted from John Romita's cover to Captain America And The Falcon #140, as reimagined by Bambos Georgiou.

1949 - and Bruce Wayne cuts the ribbon to open the Thomas Wayne Free Clinic in Gotham City, providing medical services to those most in need, and operating under the supervision of the former surgeon Charles McNider, blinded several years ealier in an attack by mob boss "Killer" Maroni. McNider is, of course, secretly also Batman's comrade in the Justice Society of America and All-Star Squadron, Dr Mid-Nite, but is now largely retired from super-heroics other than his continued membership of the JSA. Touring the new facility with the press, McNider introduces Wayne to one of the longer-term residents, an older man apparently suffering from amnesia - a man Wayne thinks is vaguely familiar...

Less than two days later, Wayne is back at the clinic - but as Batman! Thieves appear to have broken into the new facility and stolen some drugs and chemicals - but luckily the pharmacy wasn't fully stocked so not much has been taken - while cash and valuable scientific equipment remained untouched. The mystery deepens when Batman discovers that most of the drugs have been dumped in an alleyway only a few streets away. Although no solution immediately presents itself, Batman makes a mental note to keep the clinic under surveillance whilst on his nightly patrols.

That night, Batman watches the clinic from a nearby rooftop when he's joined by Dr Mid-Nite, who confesses his own suspicions about the theft - but their discussion is disturbed by the sound of breaking glass! Suspecting a further break-in, the two heroes swing down, but find no sign of forced entry. However, when they go into the clinic's pharmacy, they find the mysterious old man feverishly mixing chemicals from the store, having clumsily dropped the beaker he'd earlier been working on. Before the heroes can tackle him, he drinks the mixture - and straightens up, filling out and returning to the prime of health! Batman is the first to recognise the now-rejuvenated villain as Mr Who, a former foe of Doctor Fate and the All-Star Squadron - and Dr Mid-Nite realises that the stolen chemicals have been used to recreate Mr Who's "Solution Z"!

Mr Who charges at the heroes, vowing that they won't stop him now he has his powers back, and knocks Dr Mid-Nite flying, before grappling with the Gothan Guardian! An assist from Mid-Nite's pet owl, Hooty, distracts Mr Who for long enough to allow Batman to break the villain's clutches, as Dr Mid-Nite re-enters the fray - but Mr Who starts to grow in size, bursting through the roof of the clinic as he reaches almost twenty feet in height!

As the villain starts to make his escape, Batman trips him with a thrown batarang, and uses a gas-bomb from his utility belt to try and incapacitate him - but Mr Who's face is well above the cloud of gas, and he is therefore unaffected. Meanwhile, Dr Mid-Nite scrambles for some chemicals, mixing them as his fellow JSA member tries to stop Mr Who from making his escape.

A leap from the roof of an outbuilding allows Batman to land on the giant Mr Who's back, and he locks an arm about the villain's throat, as Hooty once again batters Mr Who's face with his wings - and as the giant gasps for breath, Dr Mid-Mid-Nite clambers up his body, and tips a beakerful of chemicals into his mouth! As the antidote to Solution Z takes effect, Mr Who shrinks, and reverts to the old man who had been a resident at the clinic - and Batman is able to snap on a pair of handcuffs, restraining the villain while Mid-Nite calls the Gotham City Police to take him into custody.

As Mr Who is driven away, the two heroes survey the damage - Dr Mid-Nite thinking that there's a lot of cleaning up to be done before the morning, and Batman thinking that another donation from the Wayne fortune will need to be forthcoming in the near future!

Next time - The Brave & The Bold Annual #4, 1987!

Looks more fun than the Cap issue with the art DC'd up with barrel chested heroes in an Infantino style!
