DescriptionContinuing to explore the corners of the DCU.The Ray. In 1993 DC produced this cool mini-series starring the son of the original Ray (of the Freedom Fighters). Interior art was by Joe Quesada and it really stood out. His dark shadows, high contrast art style was a perfect fit for the character. The mini-series proved popular enough that the Ray received an ongoing series in 1994. This is page one of the Annual #1. Not a story page but a frontispiece by Randy DuBurke. Randy isn't a well known artist but he did quite a few covers for DC. He worked on covers for the 1993 Ray mini-series, Darkstars (1992) and Starman (1988). He was also the cover artist to the 1992 Arion the Immortal series. His art stood out on the racks, it was different, striking and very stylized. I believe he left the comics industry for better things. I liked his stuff. I liked it enough that way back in 2013 I ran across him somewhere online and commissioned him to do a Jonah Hex and Question for me. His rendition of Jonah Hex is one of my favorites. The Ray Annual #1 frontispiece by artist Randy DuBurke on 11X17 board. 1994 Social/Sharing |

I like it too. Randy DuBurke makes this resemble the Jae Lee Hellshock approach with aggressive ink brush and white splatter for a pure energy effect while keeping the clean design of Joe Q!

The spatter paired with the vertical scratchy lines combines for a great energy moving effect! Congrats!

It's a great looking piece, indeed, due in large part to Randy's obvious appreciation for the work of either Jae Lee or Bill Sienkiewicz before him!

It's funny that you mentioned Bill Sienkiewicz, I always thought the cover art for the first issue of the 1992 mini-series was by Bill Sienkiewicz. It is not, it's Mark Beachum. Either way it's definitely a homage to that first issue.
