About one year ago, at Illuxcon, I reached out to Matt Stawicki about getting a commission based on the Dragonlance fantasy setting. Matt first came to my attention 20 years ago when Wizards of the Coast (the owners of Dragonlance, which is part of the Dungeons & Dragons family) hired him to paint the covers of a new Dragonlance trilogy, the War of Souls.

I remember seeing the first Dragonlance book with Matt's art, Dragons of a Fallen Sun, on sale at my local Barnes & Noble. I defer to no one in my reverence for Larry Elmore, who was the artist who had previously painted all of the main Dragonlance book covers. But seeing Matt's work was refreshing. His obvious talent with landscapes was balanced with the ability to render compelling figures. For the next decade, Matt was the major Dragonlance artist. He drew every cover for every new book release in the main series. Seeing each new cover was a treat in and of itself.

After making Matt's acquaintance, I approached him about doing a Dragonlance 18� x 24� oil painting featuring the main characters from the "Legends" trilogy. Luckily, Matt was eager to do such a piece. This past Sunday, I visited him at his art studio with my friend, David, to pick up this commission and to get a tour of his studio. Afterwards, we went to lunch at an Italian restaurant where Matt told us stories about his illustrious career.

Getting this piece is very special to me and getting to know an artist I have admired for over twenty years was even better. If you ever get the opportunity to commission Matt Stawicki, go for it. You will not regret it.

It looks in line with the bold painted style of the covers. While they usually featured a small group on each book of a trilogy, this combines all into a one and done!

What fun to commission an artist you love with characters you love! And how else are youi gonna pick up a painting with all the main characters from Dragonlance in one scene? Anyway, this is an amazing tour de force by series painter Matt Stawicki. I've never read the series although I've seen the books and admired the covers. So congratulations on a fabulous commission!
