DescriptionWilliam Galbraith Crawford (1894-1978), who signed his work simply "Galbraith", took over the duties on Side Glances from the great George Clark in 1939, when Clark left to start a new feature, The Neighbors. Crawford's work was full of lush brushwork and lovely tones, achieved with a litho crayon. Many cartoonists of the period, including Roy Crane and Denys Wortman, found that litho crayon shading not only reproduced well, but was a heck of a lot faster than hatching or cross-hatching tones in ink. Galbraith often presented a slice of life with a side helping of sharp wit. Such is the case with this wonderful on Side Glances panel that I’m offering. The panel was published on February 11, 1946 and features a young girl talking to her father as her mother chats on the phone. The girl says, “No, I’m not curious – I just like to hear Mom on the phone because her voice sounds so mellow compared to when she’s talking to us around the house!” Ouch! Ah, mother’s and daughters. The printed caption is missing from the artwork, but is written on the reverse in Crawford’s hand. You can also see the published version in the additional images area. The drawing features everything you could want in a Crawford/Galbraith cartoon. That lush, beautiful figure work, combined with just enough litho crayon tone to add weight to the figures and forms. I particularly enjoy the figural attitude of both parents, presented with such seemingly simple means. The panel measures nearly 11” x just over 8½”. The condition is quite good, a solid Fine+. There is a slight indentation from an old paperclip at the upper left, but outside of that and just a bit of light toning, the piece is in solid shape. Brilliant work by an often-forgotten master of the brush. $100.00 + 12.00 shipping.Social/Sharing |
