DescriptionAlways wanted a cel from this animation and one that had some crazy photocopy textures- and that horse is the perfect contrast to the flat paint of his robe. Enjoy.-edit- So Gerry from the Paul Martin Smith group commented that this was most likely penciled and animated by Paul before he moved over to comics. Added the screen shots of the conversation with Gerry and Paul. Cool, and no surprised then that I was drawn to this scene and cel, I love Pauls work. Social/Sharing |

Beautiful! The smudgy static gives Gandalf a gritty look to have a more commanding presence! That horse is looks almost photographic.

Any CAF post is not complete without a Marcus comment :-) The horse is photographic as they rotoscoped the actors and here they didn't even bother to trace the horse just used a photocopy of the still from the actors. I like the contrast with the drawn parts. It is such a fine line mixing rendered parts an line work, and I think it work well here.

Killer example! And I agree, the horse vs Gandalf vs the background...the different textural elements provide a great contrast. Congrats!

Thanks, yeah these textures really sell it and totally look more like an illustration than a animation still. Shame other films didn't experiment in this way- forget about trying that today espcially with AI crap and making it way to easy.
