Description

Jiro Kuwata was a well known mangaka (manga artist) who began working in the field at the age of only 13. Kuwata is most well known in the US as the mangaka on the 1960s manga adaptation of Batman.

Musashi - From the Book of Five Rings is a short manga that adapts some of what can be found in The Book of Five Rings and tells stories from Miyamoto Musashi's life. The pages that I own (125-130) describe the (fictional/mythical) encounter between Musashi and Tsukahara Bokuden. Like Musashi, Bokuden is considered a "kensei" (sword saint). However, Bokuden died before Musashi was born, so their meeting would have been impossible. If you look through the translation in the description of each of these pages, you'll see that the manga explains this by suggesting that the encounter was a hallucination.

Translation (please excuse any mistakes):

But hey!! Didn't Tsukahara Bokuden die a long time ago?

Not that long ago... He passed away a little more than ten years before I was born.

Beginning when he was 17 years old, Tsukahara Bokuden participated in 19 duels, 37 battles, and defeated over 200 enemies! His technique was flawless and he was only injured six times (all arrow wounds)! He also fought hundreds of times with wooden swords and spears!

He was famous throughout the country and he earned the respect of feudal lords and samurai everywhere. When he was invited out, he would have three large hawks, three horses to pull him, and a group of eighty disciples, making it seem like a feudal lord's procession!

He died at the age of 83 in his hometown of Kashima.

These are a very nice sequence of pages with some very nice imagery and classic manga styling.
