Many issues of Dampyr introduce a secondary human protagonist who joins Harlan Draka’s latest adventure. In this case, it's Vilmos Farkas, a Hungarian detective who had been harassed out of the police force after exposing corruption, Serpico-style. On these pages, Vilmos talks with cops at a murder scene. The first caption is his internal noir monologue:
“No, I don't like ghosts. And I don't like old, dusty stories either. But I had to tell you this one. You'll understand why. It was a day like any other, spent listening to the chatter of a jealous husband. Yet another squalid day for a former homicide cop who ended up as a private investigator for six thousand florins an hour... Oh yeah...I forgot...plus expenses.”
“Look at that. The great Vilmos Farkas! Were you planning to rat out some more of your former colleagues, or did you run out of adultery cases to stalk?”
“I'm waiting for you to come visit me in the office, Commissioner. If you want me to find out how many cops your wife sleeps with, I might even give you a discount.”
“You bastard! I...”
“Stop. I called him.”
“You, Greta?”
“Come forward, Vilmos. We're finishing up here.”
“Are you crazy? Farkas is just an ex-cop.”
“Calm down. He'll be done quickly.”
We'll soon find out why a sympathetic policewoman called Vilmos to this crime scene.
