DescriptionHoly crap it's a DC page!! This comes from issue #28 of the second volume of Starman which comprised the seminal run on the character by James Robinson. This one-off story was one of two issues drawn by Craig Hamilton and Ray Snyder. This is a flashback story that focuses on the blue-skinned, red-haired Starman from another planet Mikaal Tomas. Set in the 1970s and almost entirely in a disco club, Mikaal is confronted by Komak, the only other survivor of their race. This issue has a lot of action as the two aliens fight to the death in a dreamlike mindscape. In this final page of the issue, we see The Shade writing about Mikaal's disappearance in his journal, and Jack Knight, the latest Starman reads said journal entry. I began reading Starman for the first time in 2024, a mere 30 years after it first came out. The series immediately drew me in and I could see why it garnered such high praise. Robinson and company explore the timeless themes of family and legacy in a sweeping narrative of epic scope. The series jumps around in time and constantly switches focus between characters in an ever expanding cast, but this issue stood out as a favorite for me. Something about the battle to see who would be the last survivor of an alien race set against the background of a drug fueled disco scene really drew me in. Hamilton and Snyder's art were also very different from the "main" style set down by Tony Harris. The linework on this page is insane and I found myself being pulled into it to really dig into the art. Just look at all the stuff on The Shade's desk, or on the shelves behind him. And if you zoom in on the bottom right corner of the page you see that Jack is eating a pizza from Berni's Monster Pizza, located on Wrightson Blvd. This is the second end page to enter my collection. I like the contrast of the two panels from different centuries as Hamilton spent just as much time on each one!
