Description

Original Archie drawing done by Bob Montana that I also bought from the Montana family and was an unused piece probably dating from late 1941 to early 1942. My guess is somewhere around the Pep Comics #22, 23 or Jackpot #4 timeframe due to the Archie outfit shown. I asked Bob Montana's oldest daughter Paige to sign the back for me. My opinion is that this was probably used as the pitch piece to Harry Shorten when Archie was being considered thus the reason it was saved as none of the Pep Comics #22 art was in the Bob Montana personal collection. He didn't even have the Pep Comics 22 comicbook.

If even with so many surviving heirs we can't get a definitive answer to the mystery of what this was intended for, I guess it'll never be known. But nevertheless, it's still a nice piece of very early Archie history!

These designs are so early and unrecognizable to us now as we only know the streamlined versions. Rare piece from the beginnings of an American institution.
