Description
Keeping with the theme of SoCal greats I'm thrilled to share a piece by the legend, Rick Griffin. Griffin has been on my wishlist since I started collecting but his work is hard to find and when it comes to market it can command high dollar due to his rabid fanbase in the underground comix world, music and poster art community, surf community, and beyond.

I first learned about his work from the rock'n roll world when I was thirteen hacking away at Hendrix riffs. Griffin created iconic posters and images for Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and the iconic Rolling Stone magazine logo. I later learned about his underground comix work in Zap, Tales of the Tube, Yellow Dog, Surfer Magazine, and others alongside Robert Crumb, Victor Moscoso, Gilbert Shelton and others.

I feel lucky to have found a published piece, even if it's a partial page, an epic time in the artist's career. Griffin created this art for Yellow Dog Magazine issue 8 in 1968, which was published February 24th, 1969. The underground comix newspaper was published by Print Mint from 1968-73 in Berkeley, CA. It was exciting to see RickGriffinDesigns.com use this art as part of the Yellow Dog Serigraph Limited Edition Prints done Dec 10, 2022 (65 printed on Cotton Rag, 14 each Red, Blue and Yellow variants on Rainbow Foil).

This piece came from the collection of Jacaeber Kastor. Kastor is a writer, artist, gallery-owner and curator of psychedelic art. I believe he is the former owner of the successful Psychedelic Solution gallery in New York's West Village.

If anyone happens to know where the art for the rest of this page is feel free to reach out. Thanks!

The summer of love!  Nothing better than art from the underground during that most seminal time period of the counter culture.

This artist and his style was a staple of comix and mags my dad had laying around when I was a kid. I was born when this great piece was created. Nice addition to your collection!
