DescriptionLatest Golden Age Team-Up Project commission - The Brave & The Bold issue #256, teaming Batman with Manhunter (Dan Richards), adapted by Bambos Georgiou from Marie Severin's cover to Ka-Zar #2 (which was itself an adaptation of John Romita's cover to Daredevil #12 - I used the Severin version since it features Zabu, who I felt could be remodeled as Thor, The Thunder Dog).1946 - and at an event in Gotham City thrown by a number of rich philanthropists to recognise and honour the work of police departments across the country, Batman gives the keynote speech. However, the attendees - from beat patrol officers to detectives - start to fall asleep, not as a result of Batman's oratory but because an almost-undetectable gas is being pumped into the auditorium through the air-conditioning system. Alerted by the sight of a number of his audience slumping to the floor, Batman snatches a portable gas-mask from his belt - but too late to avoid being affected by the gas! As he's overcome, along with the rest of the attendees, the last thing he sees is half a dozen figures appearing, clad in full-body suits marked with the number 6! Some moments later, as the gas clears, Batman is surprised to find himself still in the auditorium - he'd assumed that this was the work of villains who were targeting him rather than the police in general - and even more so to discover that the audience seems to have been untouched. However, that illusion is dispelled when it's realised that two police officers are missing - Jim Harper and Charles (Chuck) Lane! Batman swiftly calls the senior officers together to try and understand what link the two abducted men (although he is aware of their heroic identities as the Guardian and the Jester, he can't think of any other link) - but as Batman and the police bigwigs confer, newly-promoted detective Dan Richards sneaks out of the auditorium, dons his costume, and returns in his guise as Manhunter, together with his canine companion, Thor, The Thunder Dog! The two heroes greet each other, and Manhunter reveals that he's aware that Harper and Lane had worked together on a case in 1941 - and this triggers a memory for Batman which links to the sight of the costumed kidnappers - and a case which had involved the use of gas! Batman and Manhunter race to the Batmobile, accompanied by Thor, and speed off, while Batman shares with Manhunter his recollection of an early case in which the Sandman had stopped the so-called "Society Of Six" from commiting a series of robberies using "Lewisite", a fatal gas developed during the Great War (as seen in World's Finest Comics #4). The gang members were taken into custody and jailed, and Manhunter confirms that both Jim Harper and Chuck Lane had been part of the police detail which had arrested the crooks. The Batmobile pulls up at police headquarters, and the two heroes are quickly able to access the files on the case - and disover that the members of the Society Of Six had recently escaped from jail. After a swift perusal, they speed off again to the site of a hide-out used by the Society Of Six in 1941. Stopping some distance away, Batman, Manhunter and Thor sneak up on the remote cabin - and are rewarded by the sight of the Society members and their kidnap victims, Harper and Lane. As the two are still alive, the heroes burst into action, kicking in the cabin's door and brawling with the criminals - but as the villains attempt to use their gas once more, Batman and Manhunter ensure that the fight moves out of the cabin and into the forest which surrounds it, where the gas will disperse more readily and be less effective. A lucky blow from one of the crooks briefly dazes Manhunter, and Batman is left to face all six Society members - but as he is surrounded, and the leader of the criminals threatens him, Manhunter revives, swiftly shins up a tree, and commands Thor to attack the crooks, before leaping into the fray himself. Meanwhile, inside the cabin, Jim Harper and Chuck Lane have recovered, and are able to don their own costumes, and join the fight as the Guardian and the Jester! In quick succession, the Guardian punches one member of the Society into unconsciousness; the Jester knocks another out by throwing his harlequin-headed weapon, Quinopolis; Thor grabs a third by the arm and immobilises him; Manhunter grapples with a fourth and wrestles him to the ground; and and a right hook from Batman takes out a fifth. Now outnumbered, the Society's leader turns to flee - but a well-aimed batarang trips him and, before he can regain his feet, a shouted command from Manhunter has Thor pounce on the falled villain - and he, too, is captured. With the Society once again in custody, the three costumed police officers promise them that, while they may have escaped from prison once, they won't do so again, and can look forward to a very long stretch inside! Next time: two heroes, three villains, and action all the way! Social/Sharing |
