That lighting from a low angle fireplace is is so dramatic with the shadows on the figures and how that hit the far wall.  Beautiful piece of Americana past.

Wow, a stunning example of his mastery. The composition is full of tension and anticipation, as the three men and the woman cautiously approach the window, each ready for action while the fourth man looks on in safety behind the others! The way Cornwell uses light and shadow to emphasize the figures, while leaving the cause of the disturbance off-screen, is brilliant. It keeps the viewer on edge, heightening the suspense of the moment. This is how you tell a story with a single image!

This an unforgettable piece that shows Cirnwell's skill in both storytelling and technical execution. Truly a masterpiece of American illustration!
