To paraphrase Gandalf, there are older and fouler things than Namor in the deep places of the world. As Earth's foremost oceanographer, Stingray is uniquely aware of this. Imagine being drawn to a light shining out in the darkness only to be drawn into the literal jaws of death of a giant and potentially very old anglerfish.

Anderson's propensity for creating bizarre creatures is on full display here. Just look at the layering of ink and paints and markers that build up to create the lumpy, textured flesh of the monstrous anglerfish. I love the subtle lines around the bioluminescent light (which glows in the dark) at the end of the antenna beckoning prey to come hither. Stingray cuts an impressive figure even in retreat. He uses his wings to slice through the water and escape, leaving a trail of bubbles in his wake. The mixture of technique and expert use of color really make this deep sea commission pop!

Chris told me that he broke out his air brush for this commission. Inks, markers, and Dr. Martin dyes on 12x18 board.
