Description
Classic Jack Davis EC splash from the story "People who live in Brass Hearses" from Vault of Horror #27. This is Davis hitting on all cylinders and the Crypt Keeper is all original art.

Jack Davis was one of the mainstays at EC, working on all of the books, but the Horror books is where he really shined. I've been looking for a nice example and this one fit the bill very nicely.

I love how casual you are about this.  "I've been looking for a nice example" so I just went out and picked up this EC title page.  Are you kidding me right now?  LOL!  Seriously though, just a phenomenal Davis page.  I can't get over how incredibly lush the inks are on this magnificent page.  Congrats sir!

The EC splashes do a great deal of the work to set up the macabre tone of the story and Jack Davis was a true master of the craft.  The Cryptkeeper looks so decrepit while taking such glee in presenting the horrors that await!  The Davis innocent kids look like they came off the cover of the Saturday Evening Post.

They say people look like their dog.  Jack Davis decided that Hearse drivers used to look like their horses.

Not enough great words left to say for any surviving EC pages, let alone splashes such as this.  It's magnificent.

That's a combined work related medical condition you are mocking. A combination of hearse head and horse head.

Jack Davis was one of the greatest comic artists ever. And there's not a lot of his work that's available. But this title page for The Crypt of Horror is a classic example of his superlative talent. I love his drawing of the Crypt Keeper at the top of the page. From his bad teeth to his limp, unwashed hair, he exemplifies the horror that is about to be told. Love the second panel as well, with the intricately detailed Hearse being pulled by the very tired-looking mare. Jack's use of thick blacks throughout his panels gives them a strong sense of dread and darkness. His elaborate crosshatching and detail work makes his art stand out in every publication he contributed to. Great pick-up, congrats!
