Description
"Johnny Hazard" was a long-running newspaper strip in the family tree of Scorchy Smith and Terry and the Pirates - globe-trotting adventures. Boston-born Frank Robbins created the strip in 1944, after taking over Scorchy Smith from Noel Sickles for several years. Robbins continued Johnny Hazard until 1977, and impressive 33 year syndication run with a single creator! He was also an important contributor to DC comics as a writer during the 1960s and 70s, and for Marvel in the 70s.

I bought this strip on ebay in 2004, though as a kid in the 70s I remember being somewhat baffled by Robbins' loose style when he took over from the exquisite Mike Kaluta on The Shadow. Collecting has helped me see him in the line of Sickles and Caniff, and his muscular, un-fussy line and blacks are quite respectable.

The black and contrasting texture in that first panel just sing to me. Robbins is a strangely fascinating artist. Congrats!

Beautiful strip! To be honest I don't completely trust anyone who says they weren't the least bit baffled by Robbins' work the first time they saw it 😄 Real personal growth happens when you see Johnny Hazard for the first time and everything about his work clicks for you!
