Description

On July 17, 1974, the Watergate scandal was reaching its climax. The House Judiciary Committee was deep into its impeachment hearings against President Richard Nixon, following revelations of his involvement in the cover-up. Just days later, on July 24, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in United States v. Nixon that Nixon had to release the White House tapes, which contained incriminating evidence.

By this point, public and congressional support for Nixon had eroded significantly, and the House Judiciary Committee was preparing to vote on articles of impeachment. The scandal would ultimately lead to Nixon’s resignation on August 9, 1974.
