Description
Safety-conscious Hugo Strange says: “Always Trick-Or-Treat With A Buddy, Kids!”

Who doesn’t love a good Monster, man? A fun, beautifully Frankensteinian page showing Hugo Strange and pals casing the neighborhood in search of the house that gives out the full-size Snickers bars.

Treats abound here, as Matt Wagner bathes the page in some harsh lighting and shadows. Panel one gives us a Hugo Strange and friend (as well as the trees behind them) lit straight-on by a bright set of headlights. I love the depth of this panel, as we peer not only into the back of the truck, but beneath it: Matt’s sweet pencil shading on the axle and tire really gives texture and dimension to support the harshly-lit characters in the foreground.

A fun swamp stomp in panel 2, too, with a lovely balance of black and white.

Thank you once again, Jim! HAPPY HALLOWEEN, EVERYONE! Buddy up and stay safe out there!

It's not my fault being the biggest and the strongest. I don't even exercise.

Oohh, nice way to make a Halloween splash!

This is a Splash!
You bought a monster splash (A monster splash!)
More like a 3/4 splash (A monster splash!)
Far from a Flash splash! (It's still a splash!)

Boys and girls this very page
Wouldn't you like to see Hugo Strange?
Come with us and trick or treat
This, our town of Halloween

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Fronkensteen the dead of night

This is Fronkensteen, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat fill the Monsters in the line of sight
It's our town, everybody scream
In this town of Fronkensteen

I Bat the one hiding under your pen
Treats art sharp and thigh showing dread
I am the one buying covers your fear
Snickers’ are great and Wagner’s in my stare

This is Fronkensteen, this is Halloween

Halloween! Halloween! Halloween! Fronkensteen!
In this swamp we call home
Everyone’s grail to the walk a long

Few "get" the sequential art fundamentals as does Wagner.  Already a master during his Grendel Hunter Rose Days, and only amplified over time as in this sweet piece. In college one year I was Grendel for Halloween!

Nice! A simple flashlight effect in the lower panel is effective and adds to the spooky lighting. Not sure that's the right kind of buddy, but you Americans and your traditions... ;-)
