DescriptionTitle: Please! Mr. Sadat – Original Art by Lou EricksonArtist: Lou Erickson (Penciller) Medium: Pen and Ink Type: Published Editorial Illustration Publication: The Atlanta Journal, February 10, 1978, Page 4 Original Use: Editorial cartoon commenting on Middle East peace talks Dimensions: Approx. 9" width (marked for velox reduction) Status: Original Art with Published Clipping Description: Published February 10, 1978, Lou Erickson’s editorial cartoon captures the global tension surrounding Middle East peace efforts—rendered through a sharp and ironic twist. In the scene, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat is shown outside a conference door labeled “Begin–Carter Conference,” hunched over, trying to eavesdrop while a stern guard stands nearby. The cartoon’s caption, “Please! Mister Sadat!”, is a punchline of role reversal—suggesting that Sadat, who had once taken bold steps toward diplomacy by visiting Israel in 1977, was now the one left on the outside, literally and figuratively. This was a key moment in the lead-up to the Camp David Accords. While President Jimmy Carter was working to bridge the divide between Egypt and Israel, tensions remained high and progress slow. Erickson’s cartoon underscores that dynamic with visual economy and wry insight—framing Sadat not as a central player but as an anxious onlooker. Provenance: From the Lou Erickson estate, with original editorial instructions and the published version clipped from The Atlanta Journal. Collector’s Insight: A standout Cold War-era cartoon linking regional satire to international diplomacy. Rare in its direct depiction of Sadat, this piece exemplifies Erickson’s ability to compress geopolitics into a single moment of expressive visual storytelling. Social/Sharing |

This describes the shuttle diplomacy Carter had to use in between as Sadat and Begin did not meet face to face. Either that or Sadat wanted the Johnny Carson job and ace out David Letterman.

"Either that or Sadat wanted the Johnny Carson job and ace out David Letterman." ... few years before Letterman, but he might let him drive "The Book Mobile" ...
