DescriptionNice Dr. Doom sketch rendered in black marker by the great Jack Kirby. The overall paper size is 18x24, while the Doom head is about 12x16. Unsure of the date on this or where it was done. I heard somewhere that Jack used to visit a local synagogue and do drawings for the kids or it may be one of his convention sketches. Any guesses? Social/Sharing |

I feel like I've seen this in a JKC publication, and it was part of one of Jack's San Diego chalk talks. (But I might be hallucinating that.)

I did send copies of this and a Red Skull sketch to the JKC and they used the Doom sketch in the first Kirby checklist, if I'm remembering correctly.

That checklist sounds very familiar to me as a source. Hey, were you at the Skirball for the opening?

I was not able to make it to the Skirball opening but I went the other day and was happy to see several exceptional pages on loan from you. Great stuff.

Sweet vintage Kirby! Even behind the mask, you can see a full personality in Doom.

based on this very desirable early example Kirby signature
( which he stopped sometime in 1971 )- this great sketch was
done at one of his early convention appearnces, or synagogue stops
Congrats !!

Thanks for the informationo on the signature. I've always been curious as to when Jack drew this. Now I have a rough idea.
